Synonyms
Introduction
Synonyms are words or phrases that have the same or similar meaning. They enhance search relevance by allowing merchants to configure words or phrases that should be considered equivalent by the search engine. By adding synonyms, you can ensure that customers will find the right products even if they search using different terms.
Configuring synonyms in Fynd Commerce Platform allows you to:
Create One-way Synonyms: A search query can be replaced with the configured synonym, but not the reverse. For example, if a customer searches for "running shoes", the system can replace it with "sports shoes", but searching for "sports shoes" won’t return results for "running shoes".
Create Two-way Synonyms: Both words or phrases can be used interchangeably. If "sneakers" and "casual shoes" are configured as synonyms, searching for either term will return the same results.
Add Synonyms on Fynd Commerce Platform
- To create a new synonym, click on the Add Synonyms button. You can add synonyms manually or in bulk.
- Select whether you want to create a One-way Synonym or Two-way Synonym.
For One-way Synonym, enter search query and synonyms. In the Search Query field, enter the word or phrase you want to use for search, and in the Synonyms field, enter the list of synonyms you want to associate with the search query.
After entering the details, click Save to apply the synonym configuration.
Example of Use
One-way Synonym: When a user searches for "running shoes", the system will also show results for "sports shoes", but searching for "sports shoes" will show results only for "sports shoes".
Two-way Synonym: If "sneakers" and "casual shoes" are set as two-way synonyms, searching for either term will return the result for both "sneakers" and "casual shoes".
Benefits of Using Synonyms
- Enhanced Search Experience: Customers are more likely to find what they are looking for, even if they use different terms.
- Improved Product Discoverability: Expands the reach of your products by allowing more search variations.
- Increased Customer Satisfaction: Reduces the likelihood of failed searches or irrelevant results.
